WATERVILLE, Maine – Castleton University is represented by 29 student-athletes on the 2016-17 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Winter/Spring All-Academic Team, announced Tuesday by the league office.
The NAC All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes on varsity sports teams who have earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Student-athletes must also have reached sophomore academic standing and competed in a minimum of two years of varsity competition at their institution. In total, 152 student-athletes throughout the conference were named to the team.
Several of Castleton's honorees previously received accolades for their athletic performance in 2016-17, including NAC Pitcher of the Year Kayla Wood of the Spartan softball team, fellow First Team All-NAC student-athletes Amanda Beatty (women's basketball), Dillon Benham (baseball), Devin Hayes (baseball), and Sabrina Hosner (women's lacrosse), and Second Team All-NAC selections Sami Carlo (softball), Makayla Farrara (women's basketball), Erin McKenna (women's lacrosse), and Ryan Mulder (men's tennis).
In addition, Steven Jurkiewicz of the Castleton baseball team was named the NAC Baseball Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the combination of his academic and athletic accomplishments. Also, several All-Academic honorees were named to the NAC Sportsmanship Team in their respective sports: Brooke Naylor (softball), Pavin Parrish (men's basketball), Ashley Pelkey (women's lacrosse), Deagan Poland (baseball), and Taylor Raiche (women's basketball).
Besides Parrish, men's basketball was represented by Paolo Loli and Julian Santos, while Tori Swaine was the fourth representative from the Castleton softball team. Isaac Devoid and Wyatt Pickrell represent the Castleton men's lacrosse squad on the NAC All-Academic Team, and Trevor Hanna and Brody Wagner join Mulder from the Spartan men's tennis team.
Of all the Castleton winter/spring teams in the NAC, women's lacrosse had the most honorees with six, as Nadine Downing, Katie Feeney, and Megan Wood were also honored. The women's outdoor track and field team boasted four honorees: Christiana Carmichael, Alix Hurley, Marissa Langley, and Ally Stearns.
