BOCA CHICA, D.R. – The Castleton baseball team scored three runs over the final two innings to draw the score even, but Delfines came through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Spartans, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Ciro Barrio Field in Boca Chica.
Castleton chipped away with one run in the eighth inning, before tying the game with two runs in the ninth. Ryan Wadsworth sparked the Spartans in the eighth with a one-out single to right field. After Deagan Poland bunted him over to second, Dillon Benham poked a line drive into center to score Wadsworth and cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Spartans rallied once more in the ninth after Skylar LaFerriere earned a one-out walk. Andrew Lewis then pinch-ran and advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Josh Rylant traded places with him with a double in the gap. One batter later, Matt Jackson drove Rylant in with a double of his own to tie the game, 3-3. Jackson remained in scoring position with just one out, but the Spartans could not cash him in as the score remained level heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Delfines put its first two runners on base in the home half, before hitting a walk-off single to left field to score the winning run from second base and earn the 4-3 victory.
Benham led the Spartans on the day with two hits and a RBI. Devin Hayes got the nod on the hill for Castleton, striking out two and allowing just one hit over four innings of work. Steven Jurkiewicz and Luke Salerno combined to throw the final four plus innings of relief.
The Spartans will return to action at 10 a.m. on Monday to face the Baltimore Orioles Academy in the second game of five slated in the Dominican Republic.
