Spartans Beat Baltimore Orioles Academy, 2-1

BOCA CHICA, D.R. – The Castleton baseball team scored two runs in the first three innings and that was all it needed today, as Michael LaBeau struck out 10 batters over six innings of work to lead the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Academy on Monday morning in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.

LaBeau threw six strong innings of one-hit, shutout ball. The senior proved to get stronger as the game went on, striking out seven of his last 10 batters to get to double digits.

Aaron Smith and Zac Harrington each picked up a hold with one inning of relief apiece, before Davis Mikell nailed it down with the save in the ninth.

Castleton played small ball early on with a pair of sacrifices to get the game's first run across. Deagan Poland led the game off with a walk and was quickly standing on second after a stolen base. Dillon Benham bunted him over to third, and Mikell followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Poland was on second once more via walk and stolen base. After Zach Bahan walked to put runners on first and second, Mikell hit a hard ground ball to second where the Orioles Academy tried to turn a double play. Mikell beat the throw to first, however, while Poland raced around third and slid under the tag at home to double the Spartans lead, 2-0.

The Orioles Academy closed the gap with one run in the ninth and had the tying run just 90 feeet away, but Mikell shut the door with a strikeout to end the game.

The Spartans will return to action at 10 a.m. on Tuesday to face the Dominican Republic Army team.
