Spartans Fall to Dominican Army Team In Extras, 6-5

SANTO DOMINGO, D.R.  – The Castleton baseball team rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game, but the Dominican Army team scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th to defeat the Spartans, 6-5, on Tuesday morning in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Trailing 5-0 with its last ups at the plate, Castleton went to work with four straight batters reaching base to get its first run across. Alex Borsari started the inning with a leadoff walk, before Deagan Poland slashed a hard ground ball up the middle. Dillon Benham followed with a single to load the bases and Davis Mikell started the merry-go-round with a sharp chopper through the right side to make the score 5-1. Skylar LaFerriere and Matt Jackson worked walks to cut the margin to 5-3, but a key strikeout left the Spartans down to their final out.

With the bases still loaded, Henrik Barbin stepped in and pulled a hard ground ball past an outstretched second baseman and into right field, while Mikell and LaFerriere raced home to tie the game, 5-5. The Spartans were unable to capitalize again, sending the game into extra innings.

Castleton threatened once again in the top of the 10th with Poland standing on second, but the Dominican Army team worked out of another jam with a key strikeout.

The Dominican Army team came through in the home half of the 10th after getting runners on first and third with just one out. A hard ground ball to short gave the Spartans a chance at an inning-ending double play, but the throw to first was bobbled as the winning run came home on the play.

Charles Stapleford started on the mound for Castleton, striking out three while scattering four hits over five innings. Aaron Smith went unschathed in two innings of relief, before Luke Salerno, Cameron Goulet, and Zac Harrington combined to throw the final 2.2 innings.

The Spartans will be back on the field at 10 a.m. on Wednesday to face the Dominican Police team in Santo Domingo.
