Baseball Hits Road for Four Games in Five Days

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton baseball team will take a three-game winning streak into a busy spring break trip with four games over the next five days spanning three states. 

Castleton (6-3) will face Anna Maria in a non-conference matchup at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the New England Baseball Complex, before traveling to Virginia for a doubleheader at Apprentice on Friday. The Spartans will conclude their trip in New Jersey on Sunday with a single nine-inning contest at Ramapo.

The Spartans are coming off a doubleheader sweep of New England College on Monday to improve to 2-0 in NAC action this season. Senior pitcher Devin Hayes pitched a complete game shutout and recorded five strikeouts in the opener to move to 2-0 on the season. Hayes ranks tied for first in the nation with a 0.00 ERA in 14.0 innings. In the nightcap, sophomore outfielder Deagan Poland went 4-for-4 at the plate to raise his team-leading batting average to .412 and push his season-opening streak of successfully reaching base to nine straight games. Poland leads the team with an impressive .459 on-base percentage.

Castleton is batting .293 as a team and is averaging just under six runs scored per game. Freshman Davis Mikell is batting .394 with two doubles, a triple, and six RBI. Jonathan Lindau is batting .314 with four RBI, while Dillon Benham leads the team with 10 RBI and has a .300 average at the plate.

The Spartans pitching staff ranks 10th in the nation with a 2.79 ERA through the first nine games of the season. Michael LaBeau has a 2.00 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 18.0 innings. The senior is 1-2 in three starts while yielding just four earned runs thus far. Mikell is 1-0 in the mound with a 1.00 ERA in 9.0 innings of work after pitching a complete-game gem with nine strikeouts in a win over No. 2 SUNY Cortland. Steven Jurkiewicz also picked up a win in his first start of the season, striking out eight while allowing one earned run over six innings in a victory over Coast Guard.

Anna Maria (7-16) is currently in the midst of a six-game skid after dropping a pair of contests to Johnson & Wales on Sunday, April 2.  

Matthew Leahey leads the Amcats with a .321 batting average and has collected 20 RBI in 81 at-bats. Tanner Jakola and Jonathan Roy are both batting .315 with 17 hits in 54 at-bats. Jakola has an impressive .513 on-base percentage with 19 walks in 22 games played. He also leads the pitching rotation with a 4.00 ERA in five starts. The Amcats pitching staff has an 8.56 ERA as a team.

Apprentice (17-12) enters April with three wins in its last five contests. Castleton defeated Apprentice, 10-0, in its season opener on March 17. Mikell led the offense with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate, while Hayes picked up the win on the mound with 10 strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Aaron Smith pitched two scoreless innings of relief with a strikeout in the win.

Cody Hendrickson leads the Builders with a .343 batting average and a .475 on-base percentage. The sophomore middle infielder has recorded 15 RBI with 23 hits, two doubles, and one home run. Mike Brumfield leads the pitching rotation with a 2.25 ERA in 32.0 innings. Brumfield is 5-0 on the mound with 37 strikeouts to date. Taylor Hampton has made seven appearances out of the bullpen, holding a 0.71 ERA in 12.2 innings.

Ramapo (7-9), previously nationally ranked by d3baseball.com, is coming off a loss to Western Connecticut State on Monday. The Road Runners have alternated wins and losses over the last week with a loss at Farmingdale State before a split with Rowan.  

Ramapo is batting .322 as a team, led by Joe Maugeri's .439 clip with a .471 on-base percentage. Brandon Martinez leads the team with three home runs, 15 RBI, and 12 runs scored.  The Road Runners have a team ERA of 4.38 thus far. In a team-high four starts on the mound, Corey Heitler is 0-2 with 29 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched on his way to a 4.21 ERA. CJ Growney is 2-2 in four appearances including three starts, while Kevin Foulds leads the staff with seven appearances out of the bullpen, holding a 1.17 ERA with nine strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched.
