Baseball Blasts Five Home Runs in 14-6 Win Over Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Castleton baseball team was firing on all cylinders Sunday afternoon, belting five home runs and collecting 16 hits en route to a 14-6 win over Clark in a non-conference matchup at Granger Diamond.

With the win, Castleton pushed its winning streak to seven and improved to 10-3 on the season. Clark, which came into the contest 11-2 at home, fell to 19-8 overall.

Six Spartans recorded a multi-hit game in the contest. Dylan Bailey paced the offense with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate, including three RBI and a run scored to go with his first career home run. Matt Jackson and Jonathan Lindau also recorded their first career home runs and combined for five hits, five runs scored, and four RBI. Davis Mikell drilled two home runs of his own and finished with three RBI and three runs scored.

Mikell's first home run of the day gave Castleton an early lead in the top of the first. After Dillon Benham singled through the right side and advanced to third, Mikell parked an opposite field home run to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage.

Clark responded with three runs on three hits in the home half of the first. With a pair of singles around an infield error to load the bases, Ryan Ruhlin hit a bases-clearing double down the right field line to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead.

After each team traded a run in the second inning, Castleton regained the lead in the third on back-to-back home runs from Lindau and Mikell. Lindau laced a line drive over the wall in left center, before Mikell lifted his second home run of the day to give the Spartans a 5-4 lead.

Clark's Adam Chochrek tied the game at 5-5 on a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, before the Spartans took the lead for good in the top of the sixth. Jackson led off with a single and Mitchell Caron walked before Bailey broke the tie with a three-run home run to left center. Jackson homered to left center in his next at-bat to extend the Spartan lead to 9-5.

Ruhlin had another RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh before Castleton broke it open with five runs in the top of the eighth. After Benham singled and advanced to second on an error, Lindau traded places with him on an RBI-double to right center. Mikell followed with a walk before Zach Bahan and Jackson hit back-to-back RBI-singles to left field. After Caron walked to load the bases, Pat Mumford picked up an RBI on a groundout to make the score 13-6. Deagan Poland followed with an RBI-single through the left side to finish off the scoring as the Spartans went on to win, 14-6.

Devin Hayes struck out a season-high 11 batters while yielding five runs (four earned) on eight hits over 6.0 innings pitched to improve to 3-0 on the season. Aaron Smith gave up a run on two hits in the seventh, before Michael LaBeau pitched a perfect eighth and ninth with two strikeouts for the Spartans.

Castleton is set to make its home debut on Tuesday, when it faces Norwich in a non-conference matchup at Spartan Field at 4 p.m.
