Lindau, Mikell Sweep NAC Weekly Awards

CASTLETON, Vt. – After leading the Castleton baseball team to its fourth consecutive North Atlantic Conference title, Jonathan Lindau was honored as the NAC Player of the Week, while freshman Davis Mikell earned Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office.

Lindau caught every inning behind the plate in the tournament, while batting .353 (6-for-17) with eight RBI, two runs scored, two doubles, and a home run to lead the Spartans offensively. The Tournament MVP came through in pivotal moments of the tournament, recording three straight multi-hit performances and driving in at least one run in all four elimination contests. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI in back-to-back wins over Lyndon and Husson, before going 2-for-3 in the opening Championship game against New England College with a crucial two-out, three-run home run in the sixth inning. Behind the plate, Lindau caught another runner stealing to contribute to his impressive .478 caught-stealing percentage (11-for-23) for the season.

Mikell took the mound in two separate elimination games for the Spartans. In a 4-3 win over Husson, Mikell overpowered the Eagles by striking out the side in the ninth after they had rallied for three runs in the eighth. His first career save sent the Spartans to the Championship game against New England College, where he got the start against the Pilgrims less than 24 hours later. Mikell matched a career high with 10 strikeouts in the game while allowing just one earned run over seven innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. At the plate, Mikell batted .353 (6-for-17) with four RBI and five runs scored. The freshman also belted two home runs to put him in a tie for first place in the conference with nine on the season. In an elimination game against Lyndon, he went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and a three-run home run to help lead the Spartans to victory. In the deciding game for the title, Mikell went 2-for-3 with his second home run of the weekend in a thrilling 7-6 victory.

With the conference title, Castleton (34-8) will head to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament tied for the most single-season wins in program history. The Spartans will learn their destination for Regionals late Sunday evening.
