Baseball Earns No. 5 Seed in New York Regional; To Play USM in First Round

CASTLETON, Vt. – After claiming its fourth consecutive North Atlantic Conference title, the Castleton baseball team has earned the No. 5 seed in the Division III New York Regional and will face second-seeded University of Southern Maine at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in the opening round at the Onondaga Community College Baseball Complex.

Castleton (34-8), which is receiving votes in the latest national poll, will be making its seventh all-time NCAA Tournament appearance and fourth straight after securing the NAC Championship with two wins against New England College, 9-3 and 7-6, in the finals to earn the automatic berth. 

No. 20 University of Southern Maine (30-11) earned an at-large bid out of the Little East Conference after falling to UMass-Dartmouth, 6-3, in the conference tournament. The Huskies are making their 23rd all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fifth in the last six years.

Oswego State (28-8) – ranked No. 7 nationally – is the top seed after winning the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). The Lakers will face sixth-seeded Ithaca (28-11), which earned the Empire 8 Conference's first-ever automatic bid after defeating St. John Fisher in the finals.

The College of New Jersey (31-11), the nation's 19th-ranked team, earned the third seed as the automatic qualifier out of the New Jersey Athletic Conference and will play fourth-seeded Tufts (30-8-1), which won the New England Small College Athletic Conference and is ranked 13th nationally.

Six teams will compete at four regional sites and eight teams will compete at four regional sites. All regionals will use a double-elimination format. Winners of the eight regional tournaments will qualify for the double-elimination championship at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin.
