CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University baseball team continued to collect postseason awards earlier in the week, as senior pitcher Devin Hayes and freshman pitcher/first baseman Davis Mikell were recognized with All-Region honors from both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA).
Hayes was named to both the ABCA/Rawlings and NEIBA All-New England Region First Team as a pitcher after going 7-1 in nine starts with a 1.58 earned run average, five complete games, and 59 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings of work. Hayes, an All-NAC and All-ECAC New England honoree, allowed just 49 hits, nine walks, and 12 runs during the season, leading the Spartan pitching staff to the lowest earned run average in the country.
Mikell adds Second Team All-Region recognition as a utility player from both ABCA/Rawlings and the NEIBA to a crowded awards collection that also includes NAC and ECAC New England Rookie of the Year honors. Offensively, Mikell batted .313 with 45 hits, including 10 doubles, two triples, and nine home runs, 34 runs scored, and 32 runs batted in. On the mound, he went 6-2 with one save, a 1.64 earned run average, three complete games, and 73 strikeouts in 55 innings of work.
The Castleton University baseball team won its fourth consecutive North Atlantic Conference title and participated in the New York Regional of the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. The Spartans tied a program record with 34 victories, including a 21-3 record within the NAC during the regular season.
