CASTLETON, Vt. – After taking three games out of four from UMaine-Farmington over the weekend, the Castleton baseball team returns to North Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Colby-Sawyer at 2 p.m. at Spartan Field.
Castleton (10-9, 4-2 NAC) come into the matchup winners in four of its last five games. The Spartans won the first three games against UMF, before dropping the series finale, 4-3. Starting pitchers Joe Gratton and Garrett Moran combined for 12 strikeouts with three earned runs over 13 innings to pick up two victories, while Aaron Smith appeared in three games and went 1-1 with four strikeouts in eight innings.
The Spartans rank fifth in the NAC in batting average (.242) and third in on-base percentage (.380) with 110 runs in 19 games. After going 8-for-20 over the past week, Jonathan Lindau leads the offense in batting average (.328), on-base percentage (.506), slugging percentage (.534), runs (18), and RBI (17). Davis Mikell is hitting .318 with three home runs and 15 RBI, while Mitchell Caron has notched a .310 average with six doubles and 10 RBI.
Castleton surrendered just five earned runs in the entire four-game series with UMF and ranks third in the NAC in ERA with a 5.05 mark. Gratton is second in the conference in wins (4) and fifth in ERA (2.96) with 24 strikeouts 24.1 innings. Smith is 2-2 with a save in 10 appearances, while Moran is 2-0 with 19 strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA in 18 innings. Andy Kenosh has been strong in three relief appearances, sporting a 2.57 ERA with a pair of strikeouts in seven innings.
Colby-Sawyer enters the week 2-9 overall and has not played a conference game yet after seeing its last seven games postponed or cancelled. The Chargers have not played since Thursday, March 22, in a 7-5 loss to Lesley.
Offensively, the Chargers are batting .256 as a team. Austin Butler leads the way with a .500 average (5-for-10) with five hits and three RBI. Dougie Avellino is batting .367 with 11 hits, two doubles, and four RBI in 10 games, while Brendan Thurber sports a .333 clip with five doubles and a team-leading nine runs scored.
On the mound, Colby-Sawyer has posted a 7.27 ERA. Noah Yeingst is 0-2 with eight strikeouts and a 4.30 ERA in 14.2 innings to lead the pitching staff. Ryan Glendye is 1-2 with a 7.41 ERA in 17 innings, while AJ Cavossa has notched a team-leading nine strikeouts in six innings of relief work for the Chargers.
Colby-Sawyer took both ends of the conference doubleheader at Spartan Field last season, 2-0 and 2-1. Castleton bounced back at Colby-Sawyer, defeating the Chargers twice, 10-5 and 7-1, to salvage a split of the season series.
