Baseball Sweeps Final NAC Weekly Awards

WATERVILLE, Maine – Coming off its fifth consecutive North Atlantic Conference title, the Castleton baseball team has swept the final NAC weekly awards of the season, announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

Davis Mikell was tabbed Player of the Week, while Joe Gratton earned Pitcher of the Week and Andy Kenosh was named Rookie of the Week.

Mikell batted .579 (11-for-19) with a stellar .704 on-base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage in five games. He recorded at least one hit in every contest, including three multi-hit performances, with three doubles and nine RBI.

In the conference tournament alone, Mikell hit .615 (8-for-13) with four extra base hits to earn MVP honors. Against NEC in the Championship game, he blasted a towering grand slam to blow the game open in the first inning and finished 4-for-5 with six RBI. Mikell heads into the NCAA Tournament riding an eight-game hitting streak and leads the team in batting average (.376), on-base percentage (.526), and slugging percentage (.586).

Gratton fired 11 innings without conceding an earned run while allowing just eight hits and one walk with 12 strikeouts en route to two victories. The junior got the nod in the opening game of the NAC Tournament and set the tone for the Spartan squad, hurling a complete game against UMaine-Farmington and allowing two unearned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in the win. Gratton is tied for first place in the NAC in wins with eight and owns a 2.63 ERA in 51.1 innings of work on the season.

Kenosh came through in the clutch on the mound for Castleton, tossing four important innings against Lyndon during the conference tournament. After Lyndon scored three runs in the fifth and the Spartans were clinging to a 6-5 lead in the sixth, the freshman came out of the bullpen and halted the Hornets' momentum with four scoreless innings in relief. He allowed just two hits and induced a double in the eighth as the Spartans pulled away down the stretch to advance to the NAC Championship.

This is the second time Mikell has been named Player of the Week this season and the first weekly award for Gratton and Kenosh. To read the full NAC awards release, click here.

Castleton (30-10) will take on the NCAA Tournament with its destination to be determined late Sunday night.
