Football Travels to RPI on Saturday

Castleton, Vt. – The Spartans conclude their non-conference schedule this Saturday and look to snap a two-game skid when they travel to face RPI at 1 pm. 

Castleton is 1-2 and coming off a 43-7 defeat at the hands of Endicott last Saturday. The Spartans actually owned a 7-6 lead after one quarter, but didn't score again as turnovers prevented any sustained drives. Offensively, Tyler Higley led the team with 166 yards passing, including the team's only touchdown. He also had a team-high 14 rushing yards while Kevin Alberque caught the lone touchdown; one of his eight catches on the day. Alberque finished with 152 receiving yards and 148 return yards for an even 300 all-purpose yards. 

Rensselaer is coming off a 24-21 victory over Alfred thanks to the leg of junior Andrew Franks. The kicker made five field goals on the day, including a 37-yarder with just 1:04 left in the game to propel the Engineers to victory.  Alfred trailed 18-7 after one half but came back in the second to grab a 21-18 lead. RPI rushed for 224 yards on 51 attempts in the game while passing for just 76 yards on 26 attempts. 

Last year, then senior Mike Hermann had a career day against Castleton, throwing for 331 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing nine times for 66 yards and two scores in leading RPI to a 56-35 win. For the Spartans, Castleton passed for 403 yards in the contest while rushing for 24 yards on 23 attempts. Defensively, Todd Carr and Mick Wong combined for 19 tackles on the afternoon. 

This year Castleton is averaging 330 yards per game through the air and 32 yards per game on the ground. Kevin Alberque leads the team with 11 receptions and 190 receiving yards while Elias LaCount has 25 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Alberque is also averaging 21.8 yards per kickoff and in total is averaging 199 all-purpose yards per game. Mick Wong leads the team with 27 tackles and ranks sixth in the nation with 10 solo tackles per game. 

RPI is 2-0 this year, averaging 22 points per game while giving up just 14 points per contest. The Engineers are averaging 232 yards per game and 5.1 yards per attempt on the ground. Conversely, through the air RPI is just 17-for-46 on the year for 84 yards per game. Jessie Maynard has thrown for 139 yards in two contests while leading the team in rushing with 157. Andrew Armato is second on the team with 149 yards rushing.
