Football Sets Program Record with 16 ECFC All-Academic Honorees

NOTE: This is a revision of a press release previously distributed on January 12, 2017.

MARSHFIELD, Mass. – For the third consecutive year, the Castleton University football team reached double figures in representatives to the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) All-Academic Team, as 16 Spartans from the 2016 roster were named to the squad, announced Thursday by the league office.

Castleton's group of 16 selections breaks the program record of 13 honorees originally set in 2010 and matched in 2014. The Spartans are one of three teams to place more than 10 players on the ECFC All-Academic Team, joining Norwich (19) and Husson (14). To be eligible for the ECFC All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have maintained a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.3 or higher after the 2016 fall semester while minimally being a sophomore in standing with two years of participation on the football team.

Seniors Mark Alberque, Darren Callan, Soren Pelz-Walsh, Trevor Sayers, and Jordan Stone each received their third career ECFC All-Academic award, while seniors Christian Procida and Tyler Sturtevant, along with juniors Shane Hurley, Cam McHale, and Justin Nolan, were selected for the second time in their careers. Seniors Corey Brimmer and Luke TanCreti and sophomores Grant Cummings, John Hamme, Jackie Jillett, and Ethan Sherwood were named ECFC All-Academic for the first time.

Pelz-Walsh received First Team All-ECFC honors and became the first Castleton football player to be voted First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America. Callan and Stone earned both Second Team All-ECFC and First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, while Alberque was also a Second Team All-ECFC selection.

Castleton finished the 2016 season in a tie for third place in the ECFC standings with a 4-3 league record, the third consecutive year in which the Spartans posted a winning conference mark.
