Castleton Football Picked to Finish Fourth in ECFC Preseason Poll

MARSHFIELD, Mass. – Coming off its third consecutive winning season within the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC), Castleton University has been picked to finish fourth in 2017, as the conference coaches preseason poll was released Tuesday by the league office.

The Spartans collected 42 points from the league's coaches to land in fourth place, just one point behind Mount Ida (43 points) in third place. Defending ECFC champion Husson earned six first place votes as the Eagles topped the poll with 62 total points, followed by SUNY Maritime in second place with one first place vote and 53 total points.

Conference newcomer Dean College received the other first place vote and finished in fifth place in the poll with 35 points. Gallaudet ranked sixth with 24 points, followed by first-year member Alfred State in seventh place with 16 points and Anna Maria in eighth place with 13 points. Four Spartans who earned All-ECFC recognition last season return this year, led by seniors Eric Decker, Matt Lawhorn, and Jakob Trautwein as well as junior Mitchell Caron. Decker and Trautwein are two of Castleton's captains for the 2017 campaign, joined by wide receiver Ryan Barry, defensive end Bubba Collins, and defensive back Luke Mullin.

Season tickets for the five-game home slate are on sale by visiting, with single game tickets slated to go on sale this Friday, Aug. 25. Besides non-conference foes Fitchburg State (Sept. 9) and Norwich (Sept. 16), Castleton will host conference rivals Mount Ida (Oct. 7), Dean (Oct. 21), and Gallaudet (Nov. 4).

The intrasquad Green-White scrimmage will take place this Saturday, Aug. 26, at 9 a.m. at Spartan Stadium. Admission is free for all spectators.
