MARSHFIELD, Mass. – After helping the Castleton University offense accumulate 425 yards of total offense in Saturday's 28-17 victory over Gallaudet University, freshman wide receiver Jared Brockway has been named the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) Rookie of the Week, announced Monday morning by the league office.
Coming into the game with eight receptions through the first eight games, Brockway was one of the frequent targets Saturday, catching a season-high six passes for 41 yards. Brockway's first two catches led to the first Castleton touchdown of the day, as well as his participation in a trick play, as Brockway caught a lateral from Mitchell Caron and found Jermaine Coggins wide open for a 33-yard completion into the red zone.
His next three receptions led to the second Spartan touchdown of the game as the first half closed. In total, three of Brockway's catches resulted in Castleton first downs.
For the season, Brockway is now fourth on the team with 14 receptions for 144 yards, including a 60-yard reception at SUNY Maritime Oct. 28. In addition, he has been the team's punt returner throughout the season with 12 punt returns for 54 yards.
This is the fourth ECFC weekly award for a Castleton player this season, as the Spartans have now been represented once in each category. Caron was named Offensive Player of the Week and Mike Morgan received Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Oct. 9, and Jakob Trautwein was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11.
Castleton, 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the ECFC, closes the 2017 season with a game at Alfred State Saturday, Nov. 11, starting at 1 p.m.
