MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Castleton University field hockey team rebounded from an opening day loss to defeat the Morrisville State Mustangs 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Spartans improve to 1-1, while the Mustangs drop their season-opening contest.
As was the story with Friday's contest at Union College, Castleton tallied the first score of the evening. Gabriella Hunt's shot-on-goal attempt failed, but Sarah Wells was able to put back the rebound to put the Spartans up 1-0.
Following a Mustang score, Mia Sanborn capitalized on a rebound to regain the lead for Castleton. On her first attempt, she smacked the ball toward the higher part of the cage just in the reach of the goalkeeper.
Taking a 2-1 lead into the locker room, Castleton returned with a renewed energy and continued to tally three scores in the second half. Just over two minutes into the latter period, Rachel Holland notched her first goal of the season off a corner feed from Emily Lowell.
In the cage, Tashia Pashby-Rockwood improved to 1-1 on the season. She notched nine saves over her 70 minutes played.
Field hockey returns to action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday as they travel to face nationally ranked Middlebury.
