CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's basketball team plays its final non-conference regular season game when it travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Pine Manor College Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Pine Manor Gymnasium.
Castleton enters the game with a 12-4 overall record, including a 7-3 mark within the North Atlantic Conference after Saturday's 86-76 victory over Maine Maritime. The Spartans sit in second place in the NAC standings, one game behind Husson and one game in front of New England College and Thomas College, who are tied for third place.
Tondi Mushandu has moved up to fourth in the country in field goal percentage, hitting 64.8 percent of his field goal attempts this season after making 68.1 percent (30-for-44) of his shots from the floor in the past four games. Chad Copeland is fifth in the league in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
Pine Manor is 11-5 overall and currently on a four-game winning streak, including victories over NAC schools Johnson State (97-85) on Jan. 10 and Lyndon State (89-77) on Jan. 19. As a team, the Gators are scoring 93.0 points per game, seventh in the country in scoring offense, and shooting 43.4 percent from the field, including 33.3 percent from behind the three-point line, and 70.9 percent from the free throw line. Pine Manor is also seventh in Division III in assists per game (18.6), eighth in rebounds per game (45.0), and ninth in steals per game (11.3).
Taverick Roberson is averaging 19.9 points, 4.2 assists, and 2.3 steals per game, while Rasheed Bell is contributing 13.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, but he missed the Gators' most recent game against Lyndon State last Thursday. Ellis Reid leads Pine Manor with 9.6 rebounds per game to go along with 10.8 points per contest, and Erick Rosario paces the Gators with 6.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game to accompany 9.9 points per game.
This will be the first meeting all-time between Castleton and Pine Manor, as the Gator program has been in existence for just three seasons. Pine Manor posted a 10-10 record in 2014-15 before improving to a 16-11 mark in 2015-16.
This is the first of three straight road games for the Spartans, who will travel to face Green Mountain Saturday, Jan. 28, and Colby-Sawyer Tuesday, Jan. 31, before returning to Glenbrook Gym for conference games against Thomas (Feb. 3) and Maine-Farmington (Feb. 4).
