CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's basketball team heads to Maine for the first time this season, as the Spartans face Husson University Friday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. and Maine Maritime Saturday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m.
Since the start of 2018, Castleton has won five of six games, improving to 9-8 overall. The Spartans are now in fourth place in the North Atlantic Conference standings with a 6-4 league mark, two games behind third place Colby-Sawyer and one game in front of fifth place Thomas College.
The Spartans are coming off comeback victories last weekend over Maine-Farmington, 75-68, and Thomas, 59-48, outscoring those two opponents 80-52 in the second half. Pavin Parrish is now averaging 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.9 steals per game, while Tondi Mushandu has contributed 9.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest.
Husson enters the weekend tied with New England College for the conference lead with a 9-1 NAC record. The Eagles improved their overall record to 13-4 with an 83-75 victory over Colby College Tuesday night, maintaining their scoring average of 85.1 points per game in the process.
Raheem Anderson leads the NAC and is 28th in the country in scoring at 22.2 points per game, featuring an 89.5 percent shooting effort from the free throw line that puts Anderson 24th in Division III. DJ Bussey is averaging 13.2 points per game as he is eighth in the country in three-point field goal percentage at 51.0 percent, while Justin Martin is contributing 9.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocked shots per game.
Husson improved its series advantage over Castleton to 31-9 with an 89-74 victory over the Spartans on Dec. 9 at Glenbrook Gym, led by Anderson with 24 points and eight rebounds. The Eagles have won 10 straight games overall over the Spartans, with Castleton last defeating Husson on its home court Dec. 6, 1981, 77-73.
Maine Maritime is 2-15 overall and 1-9 in the NAC entering the weekend after an 82-71 loss to Thomas Tuesday night. The Mariners, currently in 10th place in the league standings, will host Green Mountain Friday night before welcoming the Spartans Saturday afternoon.
As a team, the Mariners are scoring 66.1 points per game and allowing 78.2 points per contest. Adam Richardson leads Maine Maritime with 12.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, thanks in part to a 56.3 percent shooting performance from the field. Nicholas DePatsy is contributing 11.6 points per game so far this season.
Castleton extended its winning streak over Maine Maritime to 17 games, improving the series advantage to 26-5, with a 68-52 victory on Dec. 8 in Glenbrook Gym. Mushandu notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Spartans, while Nick Judge led the Mariners with 13 points and Richardson added 11 points and eight rebounds.
After the weekend, Castleton hosts Lyndon Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m. before making the short trip south to face Green Mountain Saturday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m.
