CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's basketball team returns to the comfort of its home court Tuesday, Jan. 30, facing the Lyndon State College Hornets in a North Atlantic Conference contest starting at 7:30 p.m.
After splitting its games during a weekend road trip to Maine, Castleton is now 10-9 overall, including a 6-2 record since the start of 2018. Within the NAC, the Spartans are in fourth place at 7-5, one game in front of Thomas College and two games ahead of Maine-Farmington with six conference contests remaining.
Sophomore forward Josh Hanson has made more of a contribution to the Spartans' effort since the Jan. 9 game at Rivier, averaging 17.9 minutes, 8.1 points, and 4.4 rebounds per game over the last seven contests. In Saturday's victory over Maine Maritime, he shot 5-of-6 from the field as he finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, both career high totals.
Lyndon enters Tuesday's game with a 2-15 overall record, including a 2-9 mark within the NAC after losing at Johnson State Saturday, 92-71. The Hornets are currently in ninth place in the league standings, a half-game ahead of Maine Maritime but one-and-a-half games behind Green Mountain.
As a team, Lyndon is scoring 69.8 points and allowing 88.6 points per game, plus the Hornets are shooting 39.1 percent from the field, including 28.8 percent from behind the three-point line, and 64.2 percent from the free throw line. Since joining the team after the start of the new calendar year, Ricky Shuford is averaging 16.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Castleton improved its series advantage over Lyndon to 87-31 with a 56-55 victory over the Hornets at Stannard Gym Jan. 6. Tyler Arsenault led the Spartans with 12 points, while Tondi Mushandu contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and five steals. Darren Williams Jr. notched a double-double for the Hornets with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
After Tuesday's game, Castleton heads south to Poultney, Vt., to take on Green Mountain Saturday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m. The Spartans then return home to face Colby-Sawyer College next Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
