Men's Golf Places 20th at Duke Nelson Invitational

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Castleton men's golf team finished in 20th place overall at this weekend's 33rd Annual Duke Nelson Invitational tournament hosted by Middlebury, improving from its results on day one.

The Spartans came into Sunday's round in 21st place overall, advancing one position over the course of the day after trading places with SUNY Potsdam. The Spartans finished with a team two-day total of 654, only three strokes behind the 19th positioned team.

Zach Temple shot a one-over-par 72 on the day, finishing just two strokes off the pace of the low round of the day. The senior's round gave him a two-day total of 154, nine strokes better than any other Castleton golfer.

Jon Benson recorded his highest finish of the season, placing second on the team with a two-day total of 163. The senior followed a day-one score of 80 with a second-round 83 to finish one stroke ahead of fellow senior Luke Salerno. Salerno posted a round of 82, matching his score from day one to finish at a total of 164 in the tournament. Jacob Erwin rounded out the scoring for the Spartans with a weekend total of 173 after shooting scores of 85 and 83, respectively.

Skidmore held onto its day-one lead to win the tournament, finishing the event with a two-day total of 588. The Thoroughbreds' Mackenzie Nelson led all golfers at the Invitational with a two-day total of 141—including a sub-par round of 70 on Saturday. Middlebury and Trinity (Conn.) finished second and third, while Rochester and a second Middlebury team rounded out the top-five teams.

Castleton is back on the course on Saturday, as the Spartans travel north to compete in the Lou Jarvis Memorial Invitational at Jay Peak Golf Course.
