Centerville, Mass. – Castleton earned the No. 5 seed in the quarterfinals of the ECAC East Tournament and will travel to face fourth-seeded New England College on Saturday at 7 pm as announced by the conference on Sunday evening.
The Spartans unbeaten over their final three games (two wins, one tie) to finish 12-10-3 and 8-7-3 in the ECAC Men's East, including a 4-0 shutout of Skidmore on Saturday afternoon. The Pilgrims, meanwhile, went 14-9-1 overall during the regular season and 10-8 in league play. New England College won both contests with Castleton this season, the first by a 2-1 decision and the second by a final score of 3-1.
The Pilgrims will look to sophomores Cheyne Matheson (30 points) and Kyle Manlow (21 points) to lead the offense, while senior Sebastian Andersson has anchored the New England College defense in his final season, ranking second in the ECAC East in save percentage (.928) and sixth in goals against average (2.38).
Castleton should test Andersson, as the Spartans have the league's third-best scoring offense, averaging 3.20 goals per game. Castleton has spread out the offensive production, as just two players have over 20 points this season. Seniors Ross Herzog and Colin Murray each have 22 points this year, with Herzog producing nine goals and 13 assists, while Murray has found the back of the net seven times and added 15 assists. In net, junior Thomas Shelley started seven consecutive games prior to Saturday's senior day and over that span was 3-2-2, with the ties coming against Babson and Norwich. Overall he finished with a 2.36 GAA in conference play and a .905 save percentage.
