SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior captain Caleb Fizer scored the lone goal for the Castleton men's hockey team as the Spartans fell on the road a Skidmore, 5-1.
Skidmore scored the game's first three goals. Avery Steele took advantage of a wild bounce off the cross bar to score his third of the season. Will Steele made it 2-0 at 4:40 of the second with a backdoor goal and less than a minute later, Paul Vella upped the score to 3-0.
Austin Rook, Corey Morgan, and Avery Steele racked up two points each as the Thoroughbreds featured five different goal scorers to win their fifth game in six outings. Skidmore (9-6-1, 5-3-1 NEHC) bumped up to fourth in the conference standings thanks to the victory.
Rook scored on a 5-on-3 advantage for the hosts before Mike Gelatt tallied the final goal of the contest with 12:43 remaining in regulation.
Despite an equal number of shots on goal, Skidmore scored three goals on the power-play and Castleton's extra-man unit converted once in nine tries.
Wyatt Pickrell made 27 saves, while Skidmore's Brandon Kasel turned aside 31 shots.
The Spartans will travel to No. 9 Hobart on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.
