Men’s Hockey Stalls on the Road at Skidmore, 5-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior captain Caleb Fizer scored the lone goal for the Castleton men's hockey team as the Spartans fell on the road a Skidmore, 5-1.

Skidmore scored the game's first three goals. Avery Steele took advantage of a wild bounce off the cross bar to score his third of the season. Will Steele made it 2-0 at 4:40 of the second with a backdoor goal and less than a minute later, Paul Vella upped the score to 3-0.

Castleton (3-9-4, 1-6-2 NEHC) got on the board with a Caleb Fizer power-play goal at 7:16 of the second. Fizer tipped in Anton Tarvainen's shot. Asa Palker had the second assist.

Austin Rook, Corey Morgan, and Avery Steele racked up two points each as the Thoroughbreds featured five different goal scorers to win their fifth game in six outings. Skidmore (9-6-1, 5-3-1 NEHC) bumped up to fourth in the conference standings thanks to the victory.  

Rook scored on a 5-on-3 advantage for the hosts before Mike Gelatt tallied the final goal of the contest with 12:43 remaining in regulation.

Despite an equal number of shots on goal, Skidmore scored three goals on the power-play and Castleton's extra-man unit converted once in nine tries.

Wyatt Pickrell made 27 saves, while Skidmore's Brandon Kasel turned aside 31 shots.

The Spartans will travel to No. 9 Hobart on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.
