RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton men's hockey team battled to a tight 1-0 defeat against No. 7/10 UMass Boston at Spartan Arena on Friday.
Senior Wyatt Pickrell made 44 saves and spearheaded the Spartan penalty kill that successfully killed all five shorthanded situations on the evening.
The only goal of the contest came at the 6:33 mark of the second period when Daniel Nachbaur tipped in a centering pass by Nick Albano from the point. The opportunity was created after Nachbaur snuffed out a Spartan clearance attempt and Albano corralled the puck near the half-wall before finding Nachbaur open in the slot.
Bailey MacBurnie earned the shutout, his third of the season, for UMass Boston (14-4-0, 10-1-0 NEHC). MacBurnie turned aside 22 shots, including 12 in the final period to derail the Spartan comeback attempt.
Both teams went 0-for-5 on the power-play and UMass Boston skated away with a 42-27 edge in the faceoff department.
Castleton (3-11-4, 1-8-2 NEHC) will return to action with a new start-time of 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Spartan Arena against No. 13/12 Babson.
