CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton University thought it had its first victory of the 2018 season with a go-ahead goal with 92 seconds left in regulation, but Norwich University forced overtime on a goal with 8.9 seconds on the clock and then scored in the second extra session as the Cadets defeated the Spartans, 10-9, Wednesday night in a non-conference men's collegiate lacrosse match at Spartan Stadium.
Norwich (3-2) never held the lead until it scored the game-winning tally, as Castleton scored the first two goals of the contest thanks to Colin Clark and Sam Siegel. After Norwich tied the game at 2-2, Tyler Crowningshield picked up his first goal of the season with 5:29 left in the first period to put the Spartans back on top, 3-2.
After Cody Moore scored 28 seconds into the second period to create another tie, Castleton scored three unanswered goals, starting with tallies from Jason Sedell and Kevin McCarthy 33 seconds apart. Siegel scored his second goal of the match to give Castleton a 6-3 lead, but Norwich's Michael Cashman scored with 2:59 remaining in the second quarter to close the Cadet deficit to 6-4 at halftime.
Goals by Moore and Josh Jenkins early in the third period tied the game at 6-6, but Ryan Stone scored 38 seconds after Jenkins as the Spartans retook the lead. Ian Kennedy scored with 6:05 remaining in the third period to force the contest into its fourth tie at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Sedell earned his second goal of the night early in the fourth quarter, and Castleton would hold onto that one-goal lead until Norwich took advantage of a Spartan penalty, as Jenkins set up Cashman with 2:31 left in regulation for the Cadets' third goal on an extra-man opportunity, tying the contest at 8-8.
Castleton won the ensuing faceoff and Sedell completed his hat trick with 1:32 to go in the fourth quarter. Norwich took possession off the next faceoff, but Cashman's shot was blocked and the Spartans gained control. However, Castleton committed a turnover, and Jenkins found Aidan Moulton with 8.9 seconds remaining in regulation to create the sixth tie of the contest.
Neither team could create a significant scoring opportunity in the first four-minute overtime session, but soon after Norwich won the faceoff to start the second extra session, Kennedy set up Moulton for the game-winning goal. Moulton became the fourth Cadet to score two goals in the game, while Jenkins finished with one goal and three assists.
Sedell led the Spartans with three goals and two assists, while Siegel earned his first multiple-goal game of the season with two goals. Brandon Myron finished with 15 saves for Castleton, and Ian Kriger made 13 saves as he picked up the victory for Norwich.
Castleton (0-4) hosts Southern Maine Saturday, March 24, at 4 p.m. at Spartan Stadium, while Norwich is scheduled to play at Curry College at the same time.
