Castleton Men’s Lacrosse Opens Conference Play Saturday

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's lacrosse team opens its 15th and final season in the North Atlantic Conference with a home contest against Maine Maritime Academy Saturday, March 31, starting at 1 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.

Since 2004, the Spartans have posted an impressive 92-9 (.911) regular season record within the NAC, not losing more than one conference match in any season. Castleton has won five regular season league titles (2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015) as well as the NAC Tournament championship four times (2010, 2011, 2013, 2015), advancing to the tournament title game in 14 consecutive years heading into the 2018 campaign.

Castleton, 2-4 overall, has won two consecutive games, defeating Southern Maine last Saturday, 15-7, and SUNY Canton this past Wednesday, 11-10, on a goal by Tyler Crowningshield with 1:57 remaining in regulation. Kevin McCarthy scored twice against the Kangaroos and is now third in the conference with 15 goals. Defensively, Brandon Myron made 11 saves Wednesday to move into third in the NAC in both saves (89) and goals against average (11.90) as well as fifth in save percentage (.571).

Before Saturday's contest, the seniors on the team will be recognized in a short Senior Day presentation: Nathan Bushweller, Ryan Crowningshield, Edward Doton, Matt Gomes, Josh Gosselin, Kevin McCarthy, Sam Siegel, and Ryan Stone.

Maine Maritime is 0-4 so far this season after a 15-4 loss to Saint Joseph's of Maine last Monday. As a team, the Mariners are averaging 2.5 goals, 16.3 shots, 28.0 ground balls, and 6.5 caused turnovers per game.

Orion Sargent leads the Mariners with four goals so far this season, while Sawyer Watson has scored twice and Zeke Tocci has contributed one goal and three assists. William Evon leads the team with 23 ground balls and six caused turnovers, and Mitchell Farley has taken all but four faceoffs for the Mariners, winning 39-of-99 draws and collecting 21 ground balls. Isaiah Weston has started all four games in net for Maine Maritime, earning 51 saves for a .415 save percentage.

This will be the 19th meeting all-time between Castleton and Maine Maritime, with the Spartans holding a 17-1 series advantage. The lone Mariner victory in the series came on April 9, 2004, at Castleton, 10-3.

Last season in Castine, Maine, the Spartans scored 17 unanswered goals spanning all four periods to defeat the Mariners, 19-4. Siegel led Castleton with five goals and two assists, while Tyler Crowningshield notched a hat trick with three goals. Chase Whittemore led Maine Maritime with two goals, with Alex Grant-Roy earning two assists.

After Saturday, Castleton hits the road for the first time in over three weeks, facing SUNY Potsdam Tuesday, April 3, starting at 7 p.m. The next night, the Spartans will face Green Mountain College at Spartan Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. instead of in Poultney as originally scheduled.
