Doherty & Paluszek Help Power Men's Nordic To Pair of Victories At Castleton Invite

CHITTENDEN, Vt. – The Castleton University men's nordic ski team hosted and competed at the Castleton University Invitational at the Mountain Top Inn & Resort Nordic Center on Saturday and Sunday. The seven competing teams participated in a 10-kilometer skate on Saturday before taking part in the 7.5-kilometer classic discipline on Sunday.

During day one, Andrew Doherty (25:56) and John Paluszek (26:06) powered the Spartans to a top overall finish by placing first and second, respectively. Separated by just 10 seconds the teammates were more than 24 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack. Dave Harvey rounded out the Castleton scoring crew, placing fifth at a time of 27:19.

Devin Perry (28:40), Alex Williams (30:58), Jared Wheeler (31:56) and Thomas Rizza (39:52) all placed in the top 50 racers.

Behind Castleton (8) in the team scoring, it was Clarkson (16) and the University of Vermont (29).

On Sunday, Paluszek (21:36) and Doherty (21:56) nearly duplicated their Saturday performances as the two placed first and third, respectively. Harvey, once again, provided a reliable outing as he clocked 23:48 in the classic event and placed seventh overall.

In the team scoring, Castleton picked up another victory with 11 points, beating out Clarkson by two spots. University of Vermont placed third (31) with McGill (44), Cornell (51) and West Point (78) following.

Men's nordic skiing returns to action on Saturday and Sunday – Feb. 16-17 – as it heads to the North Creek Snow Bowl at Gore Mountain for the Mansfield Division Championships.
