QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – Junior Matt Couture placed first overall today, as the Castleton Men's Skiing Team took home the top spot in the giant slalom on the slopes of West Mountain.
This marked the first Spartan victory of the season after the squad posted back-to-back third-place finishes last weekend at the Blackwater Ski Area. Castleton (6:55.08) held off second-place Babson College (6:55.29) by just 0.21 seconds to pick up the victory. UConn came home in third with a time of 6:55.66, followed by Clarkson (6:59.19), UMass (7:10.02), St. Anselm (7:21.41), MIT (8:09.93) and Brown (8:12.97)
Couture captured his second win of the season after finishing the GS course in 1:41.65. Fellow junior Connor Kelly was in 17th position following his initial run, but he posted the fastest second run in a time of 48.58 seconds to climb ten spots and finish seventh overall. Seniors Gordon Mason, Brendan Drexler and Tyler Smith rounded out the squad's top five with respective finishes of 15th (1:44.90), 16th (1:45.11) and 17th (1:45.18). Drexler's 16th-place finish marked the single best result of his career to date. Other top finishers include junior Erick Robicsek, who posted the eight-fastest second run today with a time of 49.42 seconds to capture a top-20 finish.
Castleton returns to the slopes tomorrow when they compete in the slalom at West Mountain.
