CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton Men's Skiing will look to capture its second victory of the season this weekend when it races in the giant slalom and slalom on Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, N.Y.
The Spartans look to carry their solid start onto the slopes of Whiteface after winning their first event of the year this past weekend at West Mountain. The squad turned in an impressive performance in the giant slalom on West, with five different skiers posting top-20 finishes, including a first-place finish from Matt Couture. Castleton followed that up with a fourth-place finish in the slalom.
So far this season, Couture has been the top Spartan Skier, finishing first for the team in all but one race. In the GS event last weekend, the junior finished with a time of 1:41.65 to notch his first GS win of the year and second in all competitions. Junior Connor Kelly has been a pleasant surprise this season, posting a pair of top-ten finishes at West Mountain, including a team-best seventh-place finish in the slalom, while seniors Gordon Mason and Tyler Smith have routinely been inside the squad's top-five finishers this year. Brendan Drexler, meanwhile, picked up his best career finish last weekend in the GS with a 16th-place finish.
The Spartans currently sit joint third in the ECSC MacConnell Division with UConn after two weekends of racing. The squad looks to close the gap on Babson, who stands just ahead of Clarkson in the standings with eight points from four races.
Castleton has had previous success at Whiteface. Last season, the squad took a clean sweep of the events on the mountain, with victories in both the GS and slalom races. Patrick Burke paced the squad in both events, winning the GS event before placing fourth in the slalom. Couture, meanwhile, was just as good with a pair of top-10 finishes, including a fourth-place finish in the slalom with a time of 1:23.21.
