HENNIKER, N.H. – Castleton's Men's Alpine Skiing posted a pair of top-three finishes in the slalom on the slopes of Pat's Peak yesterday in ECSC MacConnell Division action.
In the opening race of the day, the Spartans came home in third with a time of 4:47.08 after having three competitors finish inside the top-15. Babson took home the top spot with a total time of 4:41.56, while UConn followed in 4:44.96 to capture a second-place finish.
Matt Couture paced the squad with a fourth-place finish, trailing Babson's Carter Dowd, who won the event, by just 1.07 seconds with a time of 1:32.58. Christopher Yopp turned in his best finish of the year with a tenth-place finish (1:36.92), while Erick Robicsek followed three spots behind in 13th (1:37.55). Connor Kelly concluded the Spartans' top four with a time of 1:44.83 in 25th.
In the second race, Castleton posted a total time of 6:25.52 to capture a second-place finish. Clarkson claimed the top spot in a time of 6:16.01 after having its top three skiers finish 1-3. Babson placed third in 6:27.38, while UConn and UMass rounded out the top five in fourth (6:43.57) and fifth (7:51.60).
The Spartans had three skiers place inside the top ten, led by Couture with another top-five performance. The junior came home in fourth after finishing just 1.79 seconds off the pace with a time of 1:33.74. Kelly trailed Couture by less than two seconds in sixth (1:35.15), while Robicsek claimed his first top-ten finish of the season with a ninth-place run (1:36.57). Andrew Overton finished in 16th place with a time of 1:40.06, followed by Gordon Mason in 18th (1:41.53), Brendan Drexler in 19th (1:41.86) and Sean Lenihan in 22nd (1:43.96).
Castleton is back in action this afternoon, as they compete in the slalom at Pat's Peak before heading to Mount Sunapee on Sunday to race in the giant slalom.
