HENNIKER, N.H. – Castleton's men's alpine skiing team came home with a third-place finish yesterday in the slalom at Pat's Peak in the ECSC MacConnell Division.
The Spartans placed two guys inside the top-11, finishing 11.45 seconds off the pace with a total team time of 4:45.38. Clarkson took the top spot with a time of 4:33.93, followed by Babson (4:40.05), who trailed behind by 6.12 seconds. Rounding out the top five was UMass (4:49.39) and UConn (4:51.13) with respective finishes of fourth and fifth
Matt Couture was the top Spartan skier on the day, finishing in fifth overall with a time of 1:31.47. This marks the third consecutive race that the junior has paced the squad. Senior Tyler Smith turned in one of his best performances of the year so far, coming in 2.65 seconds behind Couture to snag 11th overall.
Gordon Mason finished in 1:34.89 to take 11th overall, followed by Andrew Overton and Nick Franssen in 18th (1:37.29) and 26th (1:39.67). Connor Kelly looked to be heading for a top-15 finish after posting an initial run of 44.29, but struggled in his second run en route to a 27th-place finish (1:39.79).
The Spartans are back in action this afternoon, as they head to Mt. Sunapee in Sunapee, N.H. to compete in the giant slalom.
