CASTLETON, Vt. – Juniors Matt Couture and Connor Kelly and senior Tyler Smith were recognized today for their solid performances during the 2016 season with spots on the USCSA ECSC All-MacConnell Division Team, as announced by the conference.
This marks the third consecutive season that Couture has received All-Division honors after finishing the individual standings in third this year. The junior paced the Spartan squad in six events, while posting seven top-ten finishes and capturing two wins. Couture began the year with two victories in his opening three races before closing out 2016 with four straight top-ten finishes.
Kelly placed ninth overall in the individual standings, following an impressive debut season at Castleton. His performance steadily improved throughout the year, placing inside the top-ten five times and finishing as the top Spartan on three occasions. Kelly's best result of the year came in the regular season finale, as he notched a career-best second-place finish in the giant slalom at Mt. Sunapee.
Smith rounded out the Spartan honorees with his first appearance on the All-Division Team. The senior ended the 2016 campaign with a 13th-place finish in the individual standings after collecting top-15 finishes in six events, including a season-best fifth-place finish in the slalom at Blackwater on Jan. 16.
The Spartans have had at least two skiers earn All-Division honors in each of the last five seasons. Charles Lowth of Clarkson was named the Skier of the Year, while Babson's Carter Dowd finished just behind Lowth in the individual standings in second.
Castleton finished its regular season with a third-place mark in the divisional standings, behind Clarkson and Babson. The Spartans are back in action this weekend when they compete in the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships at Greenwood, Maine. The slalom race is slated for Saturday, with the GS event following on Sunday.
