GREENWOOD, Maine – Castleton men's alpine skiing followed up yesterday's victory with a second-place finish in the slalom to claim the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships at Mt. Abram.
The Spartans had three racers finish inside the top ten combined standings en route to the program's first regional championship since 2012. Clarkson followed behind Castleton in the overall standings in second, while UConn, Babson and Northeastern rounded out the top five.
Matt Couture was the top skier this afternoon, finishing in second just 0.2 seconds off the pace. With the second-place finish, the junior moved up in the combined standings to finish second overall. Tyler Smith placed ninth on the day in 1:19.33 to finish 10th overall, while Christopher Yopp cracked the top three this afternoon with a 12th-place finish. Junior Connor Kelly, meanwhile, finished eighth overall in the combined standings after winning the giant slalom race on Saturday.
With the victory, Castleton has qualified for the USCSA National Championships for the ninth straight year. Nationals are set to be held on March 8-12 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
