LUDLOW, Vt. – The Castleton men's alpine skiing team used three top-10 finishers, including overall winner Erik Brobacke, to claim the top spot in the giant slalom at Okemo on Friday.
Castleton had the top time out of the nine teams, posting a mark of 13:04.14, just 0.37 seconds faster than second-place Clarkson (13:04.51). Babson finished in third place at 13:22.99, while Saint Anselm was in fourth at 13:35.63.
The win was the first of Brobacke's career, as he sat in 10th place after his initial run. The sophomore then posted the fastest second run of the day out of 71 racers to vault himself into the top spot with a time of 2:33.60, defeating Clarkson's Greg Murray (2.33:82) by less than a quarter of a second. The University of Connecticut's (UConn) Brian Chambers rounded out the top three racers with a time of 2:34.07.
Paul Klosterman performed well for the second straight day for the Spartans, finishing seventh overall with a time of 2:34.60. Matt Couture (2:35.18) placed 10th overall after clocking the sixth fastest second run of the day, while Jan Klindic was just behind Couture's pace at 2:35.25 in 11th place. Andrew Borden finished fifth for the Spartans at 2:41.35, while Carter Lawrence clocked in at 2:45.51 to round out the Spartan competitors.
The Spartans are back on the slopes next Saturday, January 21, at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y.
