ANDOVER, N.H. – The Castleton men's alpine skiing team collected a third-place finish on Sunday in the slalom at Blackwater Ski Area, narrowly missing out on each of the top two spots in the process.
Castleton finished at 4:33.23 as a team, just 1.25 seconds off second place Babson (4:31.98), and 2.27 seconds behind the top team on the day, Clarkson (4:30.96).
Jan Klindic led the Spartans on the day with a seventh-place finish, his third top-10 finish in the slalom this season. The rookie clocked in at 1:30.99, less than two seconds behind the top individual finisher on the day. Matt Couture was on Klindic's heels, checking in with a time of 1:31.06. Couture was in 10th place after the initial run, though his second run—the seventh fastest of the day—bumped him up two spots.
Erick Brobacke placed ninth overall, giving Castleton three top-10 finishers on the day. Brobacke's time of 1:31.18 placed him just behind Couture and Klindic, as he raced his way to the fourth fastest second run of the day to move up nine spots from his first run.
Paul Klosterman and Cameron Heald finished 11th and 15th for Castleton, registering times of 1.31.29 and 1.32.08, respectively. It was a strong showing for Castleton, as all five Spartan finishers were separated but just 1.09 seconds.
Clarkson's Andrew Yoviene was the fastest racer on the day, winning the race with a time of 1:28.88. Babson's Sean Robinson finished second overall at 1:29.72, while Chase Ennis, of the University of Massachusetts rounded out the top three at 1:29.93.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday and Sunday for the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y.
