CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's alpine skiing team returns to the slopes on Saturday and Sunday, racing in the USCSA Eastern Region Championships at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y.
The Spartans will compete against 13 teams in the slalom on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend with the same 13 teams in the giant slalom on Sunday. The top five teams in the combined standings advance to the USCSA National Championships in Bend, Oregon.
Jan Klindic will race on both days for the Spartans, as the rookie enters the weekend fresh off ECSC All-MacConnell Division Team honors. Klidic notched six top-10 finishes in 10 races this season, and finished just outside of the top 10 twice, in 11th place both times. Klindic raced his way to a podium finish in one slalom and one giant slalom event this season, winning the individual slalom event at Crotched Mountain.
Matt Couture will also get the nod on both days after finishing in nine of the 10 races for Castleton this season. The senior has seven top-20 finishes on the season, including three top-10 marks. Couture has performed well on the big stage in the past as he is a six-time USCSA All-American with top-15 finishes at USCSA National Championships. Erik Brobacke has been key for Castleton in his rookie season, finishing in the top 10 on four occasions. He finished first overall at Okemo in the GS earlier this season, before racking his way to a fourth-place finish in the GS at Crotched Mountain. His ninth-place finish in the slalom at West Mountain this year helped Castleton to a second-place finish as a team.
Paul Klosterman rounds out the two-day racers for the Spartans, as he has posted steady results in both disciplines during his sophomore season. He has finished second on the team in three races this season, including a pair of top-10 finishes overall. Six times he has finished in the top 20, with two of his top-10 finishes coming in the giant slalom.
Cameron Heald will race in Saturday's slalom event after wrapping up the regular season with three top-20 finishes in the discipline. He finished second on the team in eighth place in the season-opening race at Okemo, before placing 19th at Crotched Mountain. He finished the season with a 15th place mark at Blackwater Ski Area.
Erick Robicsek will race on day two in the giant slalom for Castleton after posting four top-25 finishes in the event this season. Robicsek finished 20th overall in the race at West Mountain earlier this year, and posted back-to-back top-15 finishes in the GS at Whiteface.
