Three Spartans to Race at NCAA Eastern Championships

CASTLETON, Vt. – Three members of the Castleton men's alpine skiing team will take to the slopes of Sunday River on Friday and Saturday in Newry, Maine, after qualifying for the NCAA Eastern Championships.

Jan Klindic, Erik Brobacke and Matt Couture each qualified for the event after finishing in the top 15 in the ECSC MacConnell Division standings following the regular season. The trio will compete in the giant slalom on Friday before taking part in the slalom on Saturday.

Klindic was Castleton's top skier this season, racking up 10 top-15 finishes, including seven finishes in the top 10. The rookie was the Spartans' top finisher on five occasions, and finished second on the team three times. Brobacke was a force for Castleton at the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships last weekend, finishing in the top five in both the giant slalom and slalom. The first-year Spartan posted a third-place finish on Saturday, before following it up with a fifth-place mark on Sunday.

Couture rounds out the qualifiers for Castleton, as he makes his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Eastern Championships after racing in last year's event at Middlebury. Couture picked up five top-10 finishes this season, including one in the SL at the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships. The senior was steady for the Spartans all year, failing to finish just one race and finishing inside the top 25 racers in each race he completed.

The upcoming event features some of the top skiers in the country from the University of Vermont, Dartmouth, the University of New Hampshire, Middlebury and more. Some competitors have World Cup races on their resumes to pair with high-level collegiate skiing experience.
