HENNIKER, N.H. – Led by Paul Rechberger and Anton Smith's respective second- and third-place finishes, the Castleton University men's alpine ski team placed second out of 10 teams in the MacConnell Division slalom race at Pat's Peak on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the Spartans and all race competitors through the first run, Rechberger tallied a run of 46.85. Following a 47.51 split in the latter race, the freshman's combined time of 1:34.36 was good enough to place him second overall. It is the second time in as many weeks that Rechberger clinched a silver finish.
Backing Rechberger up was Smith, who used an impressive backend run to claim the second-best split (46.78) and climb the places to third overall (1:36.21). Nabbing seventh overall, also on the coattails of a great second run, Oskar Eriksson crossed with the fourth-best time in the second split, clocking a 47.08. Overall, the freshman recorded a combined time of 1:37.35.
Separated by a razor-thin margin, Castleton's scoring members – Rechberger, Smith and Eriksson – were just over a second behind first-place Babson. The Spartans notched a time of 4:48.32, while the Beavers raced to the tune of 4:47.02. Rounding out the top 3, team-wise was Clarkson, which combined for a 4:57.89 time.
Castleton will return to action for giant slalom racing at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday as the team takes the short drive north to Ragged Mountain Resort.
