WILMINGTON, N.Y. – On the back of his first career individual collegiate victory, Paul Rechberger topped the podium once again in the giant slalom. His performance helped lead the Castleton University men's alpine ski team to a runner-up finish during day one of FISU action at Whiteface Mountain.
Just 47-hundredths of a second off of first place, Castleton's scoring three clocked a combined time of 6:10.1 (370.11 seconds). Topping the team standings was the University of Connecticut, while third belonged to Clarkson University (6:13.4). Babson College (6:17.8) and the University of Massachusetts Amherst (6:43.4) rounded out the top 5.
Rechberger's combined time of 2:00.06 earned him the victory by more than a second as UConn's Brian Chambers and Vlad Maximilian Ilies locked up second and third with a 2:01.61 and 2:03.40, respectively.
Also inside the top 10 for the Spartans were Anton Smith and Jan Klindic. Separated by a mere 13-hundredths of a second, the Gothenburg, Sweden and Zagreb, Croatia natives placed eighth and ninth in the order.
Castleton returns to action at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday for day two of giant slalom skiing at Whiteface Mountain.
