Spartans Place Second In Slalom During Day One of Regionals

QUEENSBURY, N.Y. – Jan Klindic's podium finish led the Castleton University men's alpine ski team to a second place result after day one of the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association Eastern Regional Championship. The opening day of action at West Mountain consisted of the slalom.

Klindic paced the Spartans with his third-place finish. Recording a combined run time of 1:45.86, he was just a couple of seconds behind the winner from Babson College. The Zagreb, Croatia native backed up his four podium results from the regular season, which earned him the fifth spot on the Eastern Collegiate Ski Association's All-MacConnell Division team.

The ECSC MacConnell Division Skier and Rookie of the Year Paul Rechberger placed fifth as Castleton's second finisher. Rechberger clocked a two-run time of 1:46.63, while Oscar Eriksson rounded out the Spartans scoring trio. The latter was only 1.02 seconds behind his teammate and yet was separated by five places, showing the highly competitive level of racers.

Anton Smith placed 12th for Castleton with a combined time of 1:47.96 – only 31-hundredths-of-a-second behind Eriksson. Meanwhile, the men's alpine ski team was less than two seconds behind the winning Clarkson University team. Castleton's total time was 320.13 seconds (5:20.13) and the Golden Knights finished at 318.66 seconds (5:18.66).

USCSA Eastern Regional Championship action wraps up beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday as the competitors take part in the giant slalom at West Mountain.
