STOWE, Vt. – Following a decorated freshman season at Castleton, skier Paul Rechberger added another award to the list as he was honored as the 2018 Collegiate Skier of the Year by the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) at the 2018 Celebration of Vermont Ski Racing Gala and Hall of Fame Induction at the Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa in Stowe on Saturday.
Rechberger earned the honor based on devotion to the sport of alpine ski racing, team leadership, camaraderie, sportsmanship, and overall character. Rechberger is the first United State Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) and non-NCAA Division I skier to earn this honor. As a freshman in 2018, Rechberger earned Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference (ECSC) MacConnell Division Skier of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors, and was the 2018 USCSA Eastern Regional Champion. He capped off his stellar freshman campaign by claiming the 2018 USCSA National Championship after finishing third in the giant slalom and first in the slalom at the USCSA National Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y. In addition to his success on the slopes, Rechberger was also named to the USCSA Scholar All-American Team with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
A number of awards were presented throughout the evening, including the VARA Hall of Fame Induction of two-time Olympian and 2004 U.S. National Slalom and Giant Slalom Champion Jimmy Cochran.
