Kirk Notches Goal As Men's Soccer Falls To UMass-Dartmouth

CASTLETON, Vt. – Scoring to retake the lead in the 59th minute, the visiting UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs held on to defeat the Castleton University men's soccer team – 2-1 – at Dave Wolk Stadium on Saturday evening.

Castleton falls to 5-5-1 and 1-2-1 in the Little East, while UMass-Dartmouth earns its first victory of the 2018 campaign, moving to 1-9-1 and 1-3-1.

Trailing 1-0 at the 53:18 mark, Tom Kirk sent the equalizer past the Corsair's goalie as he dove the opposite way. It was the center back's first goal of the season. The attempt came off of a penalty shot after Jacob Godfrey was tackled in the box.

The Spartans were the more aggressive team throughout, tallying double the amount of total shots (14-7) and corner kicks (4-2), while remaining composed and committing far fewer fouls (14-9).

Alex Fernald took the loss in the goal as he played all 90 minutes. The sophomore made three saves.

Taking the lead just over 22 minutes into the match, UMass-Dartmouth's Vangjel Kutulla sent a corner kick in with a wicked curve. Initially saving the ball, Fernald was pushed back by the ball and into the goal.

Joe Morehead sent the ball past the Castleton keeper on the right side to score the team's game-winning score. Taking it through the defense, the forward got the opening and fired off his left foot to the right post.

Men's soccer returns to action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday as the team travels across the border to New Hampshire to face LEC opponent Plymouth State.
