PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Ryan McKay of the Castleton University men's soccer team has been named Little East Conference Goalie and Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 21.
McKay put together an impressive week to earn Castleton's first ever LEC Rookie of the Week honor. Leading the Spartans to a 1-1 record against two very formidable opponents, he allowed just two goals in 180 minutes played. The freshman posted a 1.00 goals-against-average for the week and saved at an .882 clip.
In a 1-0 loss against Middlebury, McKay made seven saves allowing just one score, which came on a penalty shot opportunity.
On Saturday, he was even more brilliant, stopping eight shots and keeping the Spartans in the conference contest after Keene State tallied an early goal and looked poised to take control. McKay's performance was instrumental in helping Castleton pull off the upset and earn three key points in the LEC standings.
To this point in the season, McKay is 6-2-0 and has recorded a 1.34 GAA, as well as a .750, save percentage.
Men's soccer returns to action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in nonconference action as it travels to SUNY Poly.
