WATERVILLE, Maine – Troubled by a short roster once again, the Castleton University men's tennis team was blanked 9-0 by North Atlantic Conference foe Thomas College on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans have now dropped three in a row and fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Thomas improves to 5-3 overall and wins its league opener.
Thomas set the tone early with a couple of dominating doubles performances before earning the third point via forfeit.
During the singles action, Quentin Barthe suffered his first loss of the season, despite hanging tough. Dropping the first set 6-3, Barthe rebounded and kept it tight, but a late break handed the second set (6-4) and match to the opponent.
At the second flight of singles, Jared Wheeler battled but also was overwhelmed by the Terriers' Ross Munn. Through third, fourth and fifth singles, Castleton was unable to pick up a game. Wrapping up play, Castleton was forced to forfeit with a lack of available players.
Castleton will have a week off before returning to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday for its potential outdoor home opener. Continuing conference play, the Spartans will host Lyndon State.
