RUTLAND, Vt. – For the second time in as many months, the Castleton University men's tennis team thumped the Lyndon State Hornets 9-0.
Following Saturday's North Atlantic Conference match, the Spartans improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the league. Meanwhile, Lyndon State falls to 0-5 and 0-1 in conference action.
Rolling to a 3-0 lead in less than an hour, the Spartans claimed all three doubles matches with Nathan Hinson and Darwin Norris leading the way. The number two doubles team surged to a lead and did not look back, earning an 8-1 win.
Quentin Barthe and Jared Wheeler matched Hinson and Norris just minutes later with an 8-1 win as well. At third doubles, Riley Laughlin and Ethan Cameron-Vaupel picked up the 8-3 win with three-straight games after holding a 5-3 advantage.
During singles play, Hinson led a squad of six players that earned straight-set victories. The sophomore out of Woodstock, Vt. did not surrender a game en route to a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing in the third flight.
Laughlin, Norris and Barthe surrendered just one, three and four games through the necessary two sets, respectively. Cameron-Vaupel and Wheeler dealt with some tough competition, as each needed a tiebreak to win.
Castleton returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday as it faces Johnson State in another conference contest. The match will be played at the Grand Slam Tennis Center in Rutland, Vt.
