RUTLAND, Vt. -- Dropping all nine matches, the Castleton University men's tennis team surrendered a 9-0 decision against regional powerhouse and former conference opponent Colby-Sawyer College at Grand Slam Tennis on Sunday afternoon.
Castleton falls to 0-1 to begin the season, while Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-1.
The Chargers were hot from the start, sweeping all three doubles matches en route to a 3-0 start. Castleton's first flight duo, Igor Almeida and Jared Wheeler battled against Colby-Sawyer's top team, picking up four games in a 7-4 loss. At second doubles, Levi Williams and Tripp Norris managed to score two games, while the Spartans third team was overwhelmed by the Chargers' squad.
In singles play, Colby-Sawyer continued to roll, dropping just six games total through all six bouts. Following a difficult first set, Williams battled back to make the Chargers' player fight to the end. The sophomore picked up three games and fell by a single break of serve in the set. Norris picked up a game in the fourth flight of individual play, while Jared Wheeler notched two games in the first set of his match.
Men's tennis returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as the Spartans travel to Northfield, Vt. to face intrastate rival Norwich. Castleton will then return home for a stretch of four nonconference home matches.
