CASTLETON, Vt. - Starting off strong in doubles, the Castleton University men's tennis team was overwhelmed in singles by the Sage Colleges, falling 5-4 in nonconference play at the Castleton Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
Castleton falls to 2-8 overall, while the Sage Colleges improve to 2-8.
Splitting its first two matches of the afternoon, Castleton grabbed a 2-1 advantage heading into singles by earning a highly-competitive victory at the second flight. Going back-and-forth through the opening 12 games of the set, the pairing of Levi Williams and Tripp Norris earned the late break-of-serve to pick up the 8-6 scoreline. Igor Almeida and Jared Wheeler started the match off with an 8-4 victory at the first flight, while the third doubles team of Spencer Butter and Nate Hinson dropped their 8-7 contest by a 7-5 score in the tiebreak.
In first singles, Almeida rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory to extend his winning streak to seven matches and improve his record to 7-1 on the season. Earning Castleton's other point in singles action, Williams raced to a comfortable 6-1 opening set win before fending off some stronger competition en route to a 6-2 second set win. The latter is now 4-5 during the season.
Castleton returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday for Little East Conference action against Salem State, searching for its first-ever LEC victory.
