RUTLAND, Vt. -- Unable to pick up a win in singles or doubles, the Castleton University men's tennis team was overwhelmed by the visiting Salem State Vikings - 9-0 - in Little East Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.
Castleton falls to 2-9 overall and 0-5 in conference action, while Salem State improves to 6-4 and 4-1 in league play.
Claiming all three points in doubles, the Vikings jumped out to an early advantage. In the third flight, the Spartans duo of Nate Hinson and Spencer Butter put up the most resistance, taking five games in the loss.
In singles play, Igor Almeida saw his seven-match winning streak snapped as he dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision at the top flight of individual play. Similar to Almeida, Butter battled through the first set of his match before dropping serve late and surrendering the opener, 7-5. Continuing to fight in the second set, Butter persevered before eventually falling 6-3 for a 7-5, 6-3 scoreline.
Castleton returns to action at 4 p.m. on Monday as it hosts Northern Vermont University-Johnson in a rescheduled nonconference match from March 16.
