CASTLETON, Vt. - Taking three bouts in convincing fashion, it was all that the Castleton University men's tennis team was able to earn as the Spartans fell to Western Connecticut State, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon.
Castleton falls to 2-10 overall and 0-6 in conference action - officially eliminating it from postseason competition - while WestConn improves to 3-9 and 3-3 in league play.
Igor Almeida earned his eighth victory (8-2) of the season, scoring his third Little East victory (3-1) with a dominating performance at the top singles. Rolling to a 6-1, 6-2 win over WestConn's Will Hogan, Almeida picked up his second win of the day after earlier pairing with Jared Wheeler for an 8-3 victory at the top flight of doubles' play.
The Spartans other point came off of the racket of Levi Williams who earned his first conference victory and improved to 5-6 overall and 2-3 at the fourth flight. Williams held off the opponent in a gritty 6-3 first set before using the momentum and thumping his way to a 6-0 second.
Returning to action at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Castleton will face former North Atlantic Conference opponent Northern Vermont-Johnson in a nonconference contest.
