Spartans Take Fourth in NAC Preseason Poll

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton men's cross country team was selected fifth in this year's North Atlantic Conference Preseason Poll, conducted by the league's head coaches.

Castleton received 82 total points in the poll after finishing fifth in the NAC Championships last season. The Spartans trailed third-place UMaine-Farmington by just five points as the Beavers placed third in the voting with 87 points. Following Castleton in fifth place was New England College with 68 points.
Lyndon is the favorite to win the NAC this season after receiving 116 total points and six first-place votes. The Hornets are looking to repeat after taking the crown last season under reigning NAC Coach of the Year, Chris Ummer. Following closely behind was Colby-Sawyer, who placed second with 115 overall points. The Chargers received the remaining five first-place votes after finishing runner-up the past four seasons.

Rounding out the rest of the poll were Thomas (64), Husson (56), Maine Maritime (56), UMaine- Presque Isle (42), Johnson State (26), and Green Mountain (14).

The Spartans will turn to junior Grandon Smith who placed second overall in the NAC Championship and 12th in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships last season.

Castleton opens its season on Saturday, Sept. 3 in the Southern Vermont Invitational. The starting time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
