Men's Cross Country Takes 2nd at Mountaineer Invitational

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Castleton men's cross country team clinched a second place finish in their season-opening meet at Southern Vermont College's Mountaineer Invitational on Saturday.

Grandon Smith finished first overall with an impressive time of 17:38, and was followed by teammate Jonah Lavigne in eighth place with a time of 19:00.

The host Mountaineers took first place in the event, finishing with 31 points, followed closely behind by the Spartans with 41. Paul Smith's College finished a distant third and was followed up by SUNY Canton and the New England College Pilgrims.

Jared Wheeler crossed the line third for Castleton, finishing at a time of 19:04, followed by Patrick Gilligan right on his heels with a 19:05 mark. Kyle Dash rounded out the top five for the Spartans, finishing with a time of 19:11.

Other runners for Castleton included Alex Lauzon (21:14) and John Everett (22:18).

The Spartans will be back in action next Saturday, September 10, when they host the Castleton Invitational. Race time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
